There is almost never a good reason to take a risky time to cross the road. It really makes pains me to see people running across dangerous traffic to get to the bus stop in time - it's not worth it.

When defending yourself there is no such thing as a dirty fight. Pull hair, kick balls, gouge eyes, bite, throw dirt etc. without any reservation. As a side note, if you do get a chance to bite, bite hard.

If an attacker has their hand over your mouth, the pinky finger is the best way to pull their hand off (rather than trying to pull their arm or whole hand).

Self Defence: If you get the chance, attack soft targets (groin, throat). This gets you maximum effect for minimum effort.

Self Defence: Hitting the nose with a hammer strike (i.e. with the bottom of your clenched fist) will cause vision to blur and eyes to water.

Self Defence: Attack joints by striking them in the direction they are not meant to bend. Kick the knee right on the kneecap pushing back, or kick the knee pushing to the side.

Be aware that having your headphones in or talking on the phone while you're walking makes you quite a bit more vulnerable (and you're more likely to be seen as a good target by an attacker).
